MS Dhoni Should Continue If He Is 100 Percent Fit, Says Mohammad Azharuddin

There has been a lot of speculations going around with the retirements of former India skipper MS Dhoni following the ICC World Cup 2019. The speculations are on an all-time high after the veteran cricketer made himself unavailable for the upcoming series against West Indies. But Mohammad Azharuddin feels Dhoni should continue to play if he is 100 percent fit and has the drive within himself to play.

Dhoni should play if he is fit: Azharuddin

MS Dhoni has struggled throughout the World Cup failing to lead the middle-order. He has been slow scoring at a strike-rate of below 100 putting pressure on the non-strikers which has hurt India badly. Moreover, reports emerged that the selectors are not considering him as the first choice anymore and if he doesn’t bow out gracefully, the selection panel might axe him. Recently, the cricketer from Jharkhand made himself unavailable for the West Indies tour and instead will train with the paramilitary forces in the next two months.

As the heat rises over MS Dhoni’s retirement, former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has opined that if the former is fit and has the urge to play then Dhoni can continue to play. But at the same time, Azharuddin requested Dhoni to show some intensity while playing and feels that the veteran cricketer will be crucial for India if he plays his natural game.
“My opinion is that if he is fit and playing well, he should play. If he is fit and performance is good, he can play. Sometimes what happens is, interest is lost after playing so much cricket. If his interest is still 100 per cent, I feel, he is good player and he should play,” Azharuddin said.

“But, I just want to request him. Whenever he plays, he should play aggressively. Sometimes, reflexes slow down after certain age. But, Dhoni, it does not appear that the reflexes are slow. If he plays his natural game more, I feel that will be good for India,” he added.
Furthermore, Mohammad Azharuddin said that MS Dhoni will take the right decision whenever he feels the need to. India will be without Dhoni in the upcoming series against West Indies which starts from August 3. Rishabh Pant will be the first-choice wicket-keeper as the management look to groom the young cricketer for the future.
“He has taken rest for two months. May be, he will tell after that what he will do. I feel he will take the right decision whenever it is to be taken,” he concluded.
